Loneliness after abuse can grip tight, a silent, dragging ache whispering, “I’m so alone. But in the first chapter of this story, we meet Hagar, a slave, pregnant and deeply mistreated. She fled into the barren wilderness, feeling unseen and invisible.

Still, God found her. An angel spoke to her out in the desert, not just any message, but words of promise, purpose, a future. In that moment, Hagar named Him El Roi: “the God who sees me,” saying, “I have seen the One who sees me”

This isn’t just an ancient piece of history, it’s your story, too. When you feel alone, God sees you. He knows the depths of your heart, the ache that no one else hears.

How Do We Overcome This Loneliness?

1. Let your heart whisper the name El Roi back to God. Speak it quietly: “El Roi, You see me.” Allow that to be your truth, even if every human eye has turned away.

2. Listen for Him in your wilderness. Just as Hagar met the Angel of the Lord beside the spring, God meets you right where you are with what you need, even when you feel totally depleted.

3. Remember that being seen changes everything. Hagar responded from awe, not survival. To be seen by God is to be known, cherished, and given purpose.

4. Hold onto His promise, even if the path is hard. Hagar was told her son would be a great nation. Hard as her life was, that promise stood, and yours does too.

5. Let community be God’s eyes in your world. Share your story with trusted friends, support groups, or a counselor. Let His care stream through people into your loneliness.

Journaling Prompts

1. “El Roi sees me, even when….”
(Complete the sentence honestly; what does loneliness whisper in your heart?)

2. “In my wilderness, I sense God…”
(Reflect on a moment you’ve felt Him in the hard times, even small glimpses.)

3. “If I believed I was fully seen by God, I would… ”
(Let that hope gently reshape what you dare to dream.)

4. “My deepest weariness longs for…”
(Name the ache; companionship, peace, freedom, purpose, and invite God into that longing.)

5. “One promise from God I can cling to today is…”
(Maybe His presence, future restoration, your identity in Him, find one to hold tight.)

You’re Not Invisible

In your quietest, loneliest moments, you are seen. Not by hearsay or hope, but by the One who knows your every pain and still calls you His beloved. Hagar’s story whispers to us: even when the world discards you, God invites you into His sight, His love, His purpose.
