What does the Bible say about Tattoo's

When asked about tattoo’s my gut reaction as a Pastor has been to say that they are not a good idea, if push came to shove, I would reference Leviticus 19:28 and to be safe come down on the side of saying don’t get one.

Seeing the issue come up more and more regularly within the church both locally and nationally I have done some research and come to the following conclusion(s).
Leviticus 19:28 seems to say don’t get a tattoo but that said, context and type of instruction (law) that this verse is, is important.
Leviticus 19:28 I would argue is addressing an issue of the day, where followers of other god’s and members of cults where marked by a tattoo. It seems to me after research that it is primarily a law of the time, one that is not repeated in the New Testament.
So, it would appear no biblical reason not to get a tattoo, but I would suggest you think of the following:
Why do you want a tattoo? Is it to draw attention to yourself? We are told to do everything for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).
If it doesn’t say no surely, it’s ok? I would ask you to look at 1 Corinthians 10:23, not everything we can do is beneficial.
Your Body is a temple of the Holy Spirit: 1 Corinthians 6:19 reminds us that our bodies are a temple for God. Worth thinking about.
It’s permanent! Unless you have a lot of money a tattoo is with you for life.
If you are young person Ephesians 6:1-3 instructs that we should obey and honour your father and mother. If they are saying no you must consider this.
I no longer feel that I can say it is wrong to have a tattoo, personally I do not think I would have one but ultimately it is between you and God. Proverbs 21:2-3 are useful verses when thinking about whether to get a tattoo or not, verse 2 says God knows our motives, verse 3 says it is better to do what is right and just. Pray and ask God before doing anything that is permanent.
